27-week update: It's alive!!!

Yesterday we were reading a Dr. Seuss "in utero" story to Junior who apparently quite enjoyed it; with the book in one hand and my other on Hilary's belly, Junior punched/kicked/head-butted my hand in delight. I think it was in delight. Was it ever a hard shot! We've been feeling Junior "kick" for months now, but this was something else. Stay in there, buddy, we're not quite ready! Not much else to report. Dad is coming in three weeks and we will promptly put him to work installing a pair of doors to close off what will become the nursery. The place is filling up fast with all kinds of baby "essentials", with more to come, no doubt!

...but will he/she purr and chase their tail?

julesandgeorge.jpg Hilary is doubtful about whether I will show as much affection to our baby as I do to our cat, George. George is pretty cute, if a bit needy and mischievous. Sort of like children, I imagine, so I reckon I'm well trained. The impending expansion of our family of three (previously four prior to the unfortunate passing of Blixie) to four indeed has been a subject of concern for Hilary and me. Will the children - that is, George and Junior - get along? Will George bully Junior? Will she get jealous of our new object of affection? Will she steal Junior's toys? Knowing George, the answer to one or more of these questions is undoubtedly yes. So we've decided Georgie really should be present for the delivery. You know, have her there so she can bond with Junior from the get-go and learn to play nice. Maybe she can operate the video camera. So, yes, my thoughts are very much with the baby and doing all we can to ensure Junior will get along with her big sister!

3 months have passed already!

The past three months have gone by in a blur. So much going on. Too much going on! Hilary in Toronto for her moot, painting our entire place so it's ready to go on the market, me working too hard. But Hilary and I have enjoyed lots of pregnancy-related experiences. I've particularly enjoyed participating in Hilary's food indulgences, especially dark chocolate and strawberries. And joining her for sleep-ins have been nice. This pregnancy thing ain't such a bad thing for daddy!

It's starting to become more real!

I can't be faulted for not totally getting it yet, right? The whole 'I'm going to be a father' thing?!? It's so real for the mother who is experiencing real symptoms all the time, but for the daddy it remains abstract. Slowly but surely, though, it's coming into focus for me. The first step was seeing the little parallel blue lines on the pregnancy test thingie. That was pretty real. The next step was going with Hilary to our 7-week ultrasound and hearing the thump-thump, thump-thump, 123 beats per minutes. Now that was real. A heart!! No magic plastic stripe thingie, but a real little human organ. My friend Mike who has a 3-month old told me that what made his impending fatherhood really real for him was when he first felt kicks from his little 'tacker' Jack from inside his wife Kelly when she was spooning him in bed. And that's still months away! Daddy's so excited about experiencing all these steps with Hilary over the next 7 months!
