Immune system down
I've read that a woman's immune system is suppressed during pregnancy, which prevents you from rejecting the foetus. Well, if the past week is any indication, mine is certainly suppressed. I caught a terrible flu. I've had several colds and one or two flus in the past few years, but this was definitely the worst I've felt in a half-dozen years. The flu manifested on Thursday with what I thought at first was violent morning sickness. I was at work, and had to rush through three locked doors to the bathroom, including one with a key code. You'll be relieved to know I made it, just in the nick of time.
Later the nausea disappeared (but not the lack of appetite) and I also developed aches and pains, a low-grade fever, a headache, a chest cough and a delightfully stuffy nose. Oh, and I also lost my voice completely for two days. All I can take is regular Tylenol. I did take a few cough syrup swigs, since a pamphlet the midwives gave me said that was okay for pregnancy. I tried to do a eucalyptus steam with essential oil to clear my nasal passages, but I couldn't smell anything at all. Quite bizarre.
Today, I think I figured out where I got it; I was at a coffee shop about a week or so ago, one I have never been to before. I ordered a Yerba Mate Latte on a whim. It was my first and last time having one - why do North Americans insist on making every drink into a sugar-laden milk concoction?
The barista had a bad cough and I thought I saw her coughing directly into my latte, but I didn't say anything because I thought it would come off as anal. If I knew then what I know now, I wouldn't have been so worried about hurting her feelings. Whether or not that was the incident that really caused my flu, I will say that I will never order coffee at that Blenz again! I should have trusted my instincts and asked them to make me a new one.
I blame Translink as well, since if the 32 bus had come on time that morning, as it rarely does these days, I would have been walking to work from the east, rather than west past that strangely seductive Yerba Mate sign. If I remember any first year torts, I think they deserve some liability as well.
Tomorrow I will be in the second trimester!
